Tube

Tuba. Bosteko (zatia). Joserra Sansebastian-Txanbela. (Hirugarren koxkan. 1992. IZ-318)

The tube is a metal instrument which belongs to the aerophone group.

Description of the instrument

It has a curved and rolled tapered metal tube. At one end it has a mouthpiece, and at the other it has a bell widening that serves to broaden the sound. It consists of three or four pistons that are actuated to give the various notes.

Way of playing

It is held against the chest, holding the instrument with both arms, with the help of a leather strap that goes around the back. The mouthpiece is placed against the lips and they vibrate while blowing.

History

This type of metal instruments with pistons have formed various groups and have toured parties and festivities throughout Euskal Herria for years, playing different music and dances.

The presence of the tuba has been important since the end of the 19th century in music bands and in later brass bands and fanfarres.

In these groups, the tuba is responsible for giving the bass notes, with a harmonic and rhythmic function.
